Info
Pocasset Manor is the rehabilitation of an 11-story, 82-unit elderly housing building in Providence, Rhode Island. Due to failure of the existing stucco siding system, the entire exterior skin was removed and replaced with masonry at the first two floors and an insulated metal-panel siding system at the upper stories.
The new design uses attractive and durable materials to de-emphasize the vertical slab quality and bland repetition of the existing façade. By grouping windows together, dividing the mass into tripartite layers, and introducing texture with cornices, bands and sunshades, the scale of the building is reduced from institutional to approachable. A new canopy helps to define the existing entryway.
