Davis Square Architects teamed up with Coalition for a Better Acre and Veterans Northeast Outreach Center on the redevelopment of a former furniture company into affordable housing for veterans and their families. Once home to the Gerson Furniture Company, the five-parcel site was transformed into 44 units managed by Veterans Northeast Outreach Center, a nonprofit providing extensive veteran assistance and support services.
The ground floor houses commercial space, a community room, and offices for management. The first through fourth floors house a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, and a two-level parking deck was constructed at the rear of the site.
Located just outside of downtown Haverhill and its popular restaurants and shops, and only a three-minute walk to the MBTA Commuter Rail station, the development is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and nearly doubles the amount of much-needed veterans’ housing in Haverhill.
