Davis Square Architects worked with Home City Development on the adaptive reuse of the former Elias Brookings School, an historic elementary school that closed after suffering significant damage from the powerful EF3 tornado in 2011. Built in 1925, the building was transformed into 42 units of mixed-income housing in a combination of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
The development received historic tax credits and also underwent a deep energy retrofit to enhance energy performance and sustainability. The project plays an important role in the revitalization of the Central Street corridor area and the Six Corners and Old Hill neighborhoods after the tornado.
