Situated in a convenient location near public transportation and neighborhood amenities, and a five-minute walk from downtown Quincy Center, 6 Fort Street is a partially historic adaptive reuse of a church and an office building. Working together with the client, Davis Square Architects created 34 units of affordable family housing, a community room, parking deck, and recreational deck space.
Both of the buildings were fully renovated to allow for generous living spaces, community space, management office, and storage space. Open floorplans in each unit feature cove-lit kitchens with contemporary finishes and bonus rooms that can function as a study, home office or playroom. A newly added deck maximizes parking, as well as provides outdoor recreational space. A new hallway “bridge” on the ground floor smoothly connects the buildings that were built in two different eras. The renovation of the buildings included many energy efficiency improvements as well as modernizations that make the building convenient for people of all ages and abilities. In addition, the steeple and stained-glass windows of the church, built in 1890, were carefully restored to reveal its historic charm.
