The mission of Abby’s House is to “provide shelter and affordable housing, as well as advocacy and support services, to homeless, battered and low-income women, with or without children.” Davis Square Architects worked closely with Abby’s House on the renovation of and addition to an existing historic structure located in Worcester’s Crown Hill Local Historic District.
The project includes the complete reconfiguration of the first floor to create new office/management space, a larger common kitchen/dining area, an accessible bathroom and bedroom, a children’s play area, and storage space. The second floor was also reconfigured to add more individual bedrooms and family bedrooms, as well as updates to the bathrooms.
The basement addition, which is located at-grade in the rear of the building, includes two one-bedroom efficiency apartments for transitional housing and operations.
Exterior improvements include masonry repointing and an expanded parking area, along with new landscaping, walkways, storage shed, and an accessible entrance with a ramp.
