An amazing transformation is happening at Essex Street, one of Davis Square Architects’ current adaptive reuse projects! Much progress has already been made on the building’s restoration since construction started in September. The former department store, which dates back to the 19th century, has now been stripped of the metal cladding installed in the 1980s that was covering its original façade. From the turn of the 20th century to present day, see Essex Street’s story in the photos above. Owned and developed by the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Essex Street is part of the City of Lawrence’s Urban Renewal District, and will be a mixed-use, mixed-income development combining adaptive reuse and new construction for a total of 39 rental apartments and 8,000 sf of commercial space.
