Davis Square Architects partnered with Home City Development to transform the former YMCA of Greater Springfield into Chestnut Crossing Apartments, a six-story, 130-unit affordable community.
Phase one included extensive interior renovations and select exterior restoration, with upgraded windows, heating and energy systems, accessibility improvements, and reconfigured common spaces. Upper-floor units were enlarged and modernized, including seven fully accessible units, to create 101 units on floors two through six. Enhancements such as bicycle storage, new signage, and landscaping were also added.
Phase two added 29 affordable studio units on floors one and two, along with management and supportive service spaces, and removed the abandoned rear athletic facilities.
Today, Chestnut Crossing provides permanent supportive housing with full-time onsite staff, helping residents facing chronic homelessness and mental health challenges thrive.
