Scope
New construction

Working with TILL, a private, not-for-profit providing a wide range of services, vocational and day programs to meet the needs of people of all ages with disabilities, Davis Square Architects designed a two-group home development located in Carlisle, MA, that serves 9 residents. The first group home in Carlisle, the project breaks the mold of traditional group home expectations through striking design and décor, and incorporates sustainable elements such as solar-ready roofs and stormwater management.

Direct connections between residents and architecture are fostered through outdoor engagement and activity. Between the homes is a shared patio, and each structure also has a semi-private patio or deck on the side opposite the public patio. Supporting the therapeutic program, a thoughtful integration of the buildings’ structures and the site itself provides opportunity for the flow of outdoor space between them, creating a variety of “outdoor rooms”. The landscape program is meant to engage the residents through physical activity and also with the sights and sounds of the setting. The theme of outdoor engagement is carried through the structures’ vertical profiles, with large clerestory forms that bring an abundance of light and air into the spaces.
